The Quickie: Resident Evil 6
When Resident Evil 4 was released back in 2005, the game was praised for it's removal of the clunky controls mixed with the scenario based camera angles, and for having a good balance of action and horror. The game was a blast.
Then four years later, Resident Evil 5 was released, adding a co-op feature but opting for a more action oriented experience.
Resident Evil 6 is now here, with the huge goal of bringing back the survival horror themes of the game, and in some ways it succeeds. While the game isn't as "horror" based as even Resident Evil 4, there is a noticeable emphasis on "survival" this time around.
You're given the choice to select one of 3 campaigns (and one secret extra), involving 3 characters from previous Resident Evil games (Leon. Chris, Sherry) and introduces 3 new characters as their partners.
Out of the 3, Leon and Helena have the most "traditional" campaign, putting you inside of a ruined city filled with zombies. On Veteran difficulty and onward, ammunition is sparse, forcing you to run from most encounters at times, saving your bullets for the boss encounters. The bosses also remind players of the older games, not involving strategy so much as they involve running away from their attacks and unloading bullets on them whenever you have the chance. This campaign is thoroughly rewarding, however most players will find the overall story telling, while well done, doesn't really amount to much in the end.
Chris and Piers' campaign, on the other hand is much more action oriented, with many enemies carrying firearms forcing you to take advantage of the new cover mechanics. Bullets aren't as rare as they were in Leon's, but you will be forced to swap between weapons frequently in order to keep the fight going on in your favour. This campaign will be a little difficult to get used to, as you will have to cope with getting shot at in a franchise that was usually only ever about fighting against brain dead enemies. Once you become more confident with these encounters, the campaign sticks, as does it's narrative.
Jake and Sherry have the newest experience, with a stronger emphasis on survival. Whether it's frantically doing the quick time events or fighting for your life against a bullet sponge enemy, you'll need to make the decision of how you encounter each enemy. This campaign has more than it's fair share of frustrations, but plenty of combat scenarios can be great fun. The Quick Time Events may annoy players to a degree, but they feel more appropriate than they did in Resident Evil 5.
All in all, the game is a thrill ride, never letting you stick around an area enough to get boring. The game looks great as well, with not very technical glitches to speak of. If you love Resident Evil, or if you just have a really itchy trigger/mashing finger, RE6 is definitely worth a mention.
